Retroperitoneal Fibrosis CT Findings

  • Paraspinal, well-demarcated retroperitoneal mass
  • Irregular and isodense to surrounding muscle
  • Begins near aorta and iliac arteries and can have significant extension
  • Hydronephrosis is common due to involvement of ureter

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Male to female ratio of 2:1
  • Most often occurs between 40-60 years of age

Presentation:

  • Dull abdominal pain and/or legs
  • Discoloration of the lower limbs
  • Swelling of one leg
  • Hydrocele
  • Anuria
  • Back pain

Prognosis:

  • Most cases are benign with excellent prognosis after treatment
