End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) CT Findings

  • Reduced renal length and volume
  • Reduced cortical thickness
  • Enhancement is decreased or absent
  • Multiple small cysts are common in ESRD

Etiology:

  • Linked to diabetes and hypertension
  • Other kidney diseases can cause ESRD

Epidemiology:

  • Can occur at any age but most commonly over age 65
  • More common in men

Presentation:

  • Changes in urination habits
  • Difficult to control hypertension
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling of legs, feet and ankles
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Muscle cramps
  • Itching

Prognosis:

  • ESRD has no cure but can be managed with treatment
