Calyceal Diverticulum CT Findings

  • Pelvicalyceal system diverticula communicates with the central collection system
  • Well defined
  • Thin wall
  • Low density
  • Can be empty or filled with urine
  • May have stones and/or calcifications
  • Typically up to 7.5cm but can be larger
  • Type 1:
    • Most commonly in upper pole
    • Diverticula communicates with a renal calyx
  • Type II:
    • Located in the interpolar region
    • Diverticula communicates with the renal pelvis
    • Typically larger than Type I

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • Can present at any age

Presentation:

  • Asymptomatic

Prognosis:

  • Calyceal diverticulum is benign
