Crossed Renal Ectopia CT Findings

  • Both kidneys on the same side
  • Ureteral opening on primary side of bladder
  • Crossed-unfused renal ectopia:
    • Ectopic kidney does not fuse with normal kidney
    • Less common
  • Crossed-fused renal ectopia:
    • Ectopic kidney fuses with the normal kidney
    • Ectopic kidney typically inferior to normal kidney
    • Associated with additional vascular anomalies
    • More common

Other Information About Crossed Renal Ectopia

Etiology:

  • Congenital

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • More common in males

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Flank pain
  • Palpable mass
  • Hematuria
  • Dysuria

Prognosis:

  • CRE is usually benign
  • Symptoms are usually caused by secondary conditions which should be treated
