Renal Artery Dissection CT Findings

  • Often unilateral but can be bilateral
  • May have stenosis
  • Areas of infarction in kidney may occur
  • Intramural hematoma

Etiology:

  • Aortic dissection
  • Abdominal trauma
  • Angioplasty
  • Multiple diseases and syndromes are associated with RAD

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • 4x more common in males
  • Typically presents in the 4th-6th decades of life

Presentation:

  • Abdominal or flank pain
  • Hypertension
  • Nausea

Prognosis:

  • Mortality rate is about 25%
