Staghorn Calculus CT Findings

  • Renal calculi that branch into multiple calyces
  • Renal pelvis is classically involved
  • The branching appears like stag horns, thus the name “staghorn” calculus
  • May be associated with XGP

Etiology:

  • Frequent UTIs
  • Urinary tract malformations
  • Catheter use
  • Neurogenic bladder

Epidemiology:

  • More common in females
  • Can occur at any age

Presentation:

  • Fever
  • Hematuria
  • Abdominal pain

Prognosis:

  • Mortality rate is about 30% with treatment
