Chronic Pyelonephritis CT Findings

  • Focal cortical scarring, typically in the polar region
  • Cortical thinning
  • Pelvicalyceal dilatation
  • Blunting of calyceal fornices
  • Irregular contours of the calyces
  • Global atrophy
  • Loss of renal volume
  • Hypertrophy of uninvolved segments

Other Information About Chronic Pyelonephritis

Etiology:

  • Caused by recurrent bacterial infections
  • Cases with no known infection have been documented

Epidemiology:

  • More commonly presents in the pediatric population

Presentation:

  • Flank and/or abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Dysuria
  • Recurrent UTIs

Prognosis:

  • Chronic pyelonephritis does not have a cure but symptoms can be treated
