Renal Vein Thrombosis CT Findings

  • Filling defect in renal vein
  • Most common in left renal vein
  • Enlarged kidney
  • Extension of edema into sinus/perinephric fat
  • Coarse striations
  • Vein may be distended
  • Collaterals around kidney (“cobwebs”)

Other Information About Renal Vein Thrombosis

Etiology:

  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Hypercoagulable state
  • Malignancies
  • Trauma
  • Pregnancy

Epidemiology:

  • More common in males
  • Typically presents after age 40

Presentation:

  • Hematuria
  • Flank and/or back pain
  • Oliguria
  • Proteinuria

Prognosis:

  • RVT is can typically be treated
  • If caused by malignancy, the malignancy must be treated
