Renal Vein Thrombosis CT Findings
- Filling defect in renal vein
- Most common in left renal vein
- Enlarged kidney
- Extension of edema into sinus/perinephric fat
- Coarse striations
- Vein may be distended
- Collaterals around kidney (“cobwebs”)
Other Information About Renal Vein Thrombosis
Etiology:
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Hypercoagulable state
- Malignancies
- Trauma
- Pregnancy
Epidemiology:
- More common in males
- Typically presents after age 40
Presentation:
- Hematuria
- Flank and/or back pain
- Oliguria
- Proteinuria
Prognosis:
- RVT is can typically be treated
- If caused by malignancy, the malignancy must be treated
