Renal Tuberculosis (TB) CT Findings

  • Thickening of the collecting system
  • Hypoattenuating granulomas of the parenchyma
  • Large granulomas may appear as masses
  • Ulceration
  • Fibrosis
  • Homogeneous calcification, 50-120 HU
  • Distortion of collecting system
  • Irregularities of the renal contour, may appear “moth eaten”
  • May form abscesses which can rupture
  • Late stage may show calcified kidneys

Other Information About Renal Tuberculosis (TB)

Etiology:

  • Bacterial disease
  • Patients with HIV or organ transplant are more susceptible

Epidemiology:

  • Most common in Africa and South Asia but has been documented in many areas of the world

Presentation:

  • Flank pain
  • Hematuria
  • Dysuria

Prognosis:

  • Renal TB can be treated with antibiotics
