Emphysematous Pyelonephritis (EPN) CT Findings

  • Parenchymal enlargement and destruction
  • Small bubbly or linear streak of gas
  • Fluid collections
  • Air-fluid levels
  • Tissue necrosis

Other Information About Emphysematous Pyelonephritis

Etiology:

  • Caused by bacteria
  • Linked to diabetes

Epidemiology:

  • Can occur at any age but usually in older patients
  • Females 4-6x more likely to develop EPN
  • More common in debilitated patients or those with poor medical care

Presentation:

  • Fever
  • Abdominal or back pain
  • Nausea

Prognosis:

  • Can be fatal if not treated promptly
