Emphysematous Pyelonephritis (EPN) CT Findings
- Parenchymal enlargement and destruction
- Small bubbly or linear streak of gas
- Fluid collections
- Air-fluid levels
- Tissue necrosis
Other Information About Emphysematous Pyelonephritis
Etiology:
- Caused by bacteria
- Linked to diabetes
Epidemiology:
- Can occur at any age but usually in older patients
- Females 4-6x more likely to develop EPN
- More common in debilitated patients or those with poor medical care
Presentation:
- Fever
- Abdominal or back pain
- Nausea
Prognosis:
- Can be fatal if not treated promptly
