Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) CT Findings

  • Make up to 85% of renal cell carcinomas
  • Tumors are usually vascular with an attenuation over 110HU
  • RCC commonly will invade the renal vein or IVC
  • Metastases are usually vascular (e.g. pancreas, nodes, muscle)

Other Information About Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma

Etiology:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • May be genetic
  • Association with Von Hippel-Lindau

Epidemiology:

  • Male to female ratio 2:1
  • Most commonly in patients 50-70 years of age
  • Can occur at any age

Presentation:

  • Hematuria
  • Flank pain
  • Palpable mass
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Weight loss

Prognosis:

  • 5-year survival rate is 50-70% for localized tumors
  • 5-year survival rate is about 10% for tumors that have spread
