Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) CT Findings

  • Solid or cystic masses
  • May appear homogeneous and uniform when < 3cm, heterogeneous with necrosis when > 3cm
  • Has more calcification than ccRCC
  • Enhances less than ccRCC (usually under 90HU)

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Contributing factors may be obesity, hypertension, and smoking

Epidemiology:

  • Most common in patients aged 55 and older

Presentation:

  • Hematuria
  • Flank pain
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Palpable mass

Prognosis:

  • Type I 5-year survival rate is around 80%
  • Later stages have much lower survival rates
