Kidney CT Appearances
Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) CT Findings
- Solid or cystic masses
- May appear homogeneous and uniform when < 3cm, heterogeneous with necrosis when > 3cm
- Has more calcification than ccRCC
- Enhances less than ccRCC (usually under 90HU)
Other Information About Papillary RCC
Etiology:
- Unknown
- Contributing factors may be obesity, hypertension, and smoking
Epidemiology:
- Most common in patients aged 55 and older
Presentation:
- Hematuria
- Flank pain
- Weight loss
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Palpable mass
Prognosis:
- Type I 5-year survival rate is around 80%
- Later stages have much lower survival rates
