Gallbladder Abscess CT Findings

  • Wall thickening > 3mm
  • Poorly defined wall margins
  • Intraluminal or intramural gas (cholecystitis)
  • Low attenuation fluid collection
  • Rim enhancement which may extend into the liver

Other Information About Gallbladder Abscess

Etiology:

  • Typically a result of cholelithiasis and cholecystitis

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • More common in males
  • Typically presents between ages 50-70

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain that may radiate to the shoulder
  • Fever
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Anorexia
  • Abdominal distension
  • Tachycardia

Prognosis:

  • A gallbladder abscess should be immediately treated with surgery
  • Prognosis after surgery is very good
