Renal Abscess CT Findings

  • Focal low density mass
  • Often cystic with thickened irregular walls
  • Thickening of Gerota’s fascia
  • Perinephric extension
  • May be single or multiple
  • Usually unilateral in location

Etiology:

  • Kidney stones
  • Renal disease
  • Urinary obstruction or infection

Epidemiology:

  • Can affect any age
  • More common in females

Presentation:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Hematuria
  • Dysuria
  • Abdominal and/or back pain
  • Weight loss
  • Night sweats

Prognosis:

  • Can resolve with treatment which may range from antibiotics to drainage to surgery
