Horseshoe Kidney CT Findings

  • Majority of each kidney lies on side of spine
  • Both kidneys involved
  • Renal pelvis usually rotated anteriorly
  • 90% of cases occur with connection at lower pole
  • May be more likely injured in trauma like MVA

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • May be hereditary
  • Common with Edwards and Turner syndromes

Epidemiology:

  • More common in males

Presentation:

  • Asymptomatic

Prognosis:

  • Horseshoe kidneys are benign but may lead to increased renal complications
