Saddle Pulmonary Embolism (PE) CT Findings

  • Large pulmonary embolism that is draped over the pulmonary trunk bifurcation
  • Only occurs with acute PE
  • Can be difficult to distinguish from a pulmonary artery sarcoma

Etiology:

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Prolonged immobility
  • Blood clots

Epidemiology:

  • Median age is 60 years
  • Slightly more common in women

Presentation:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Syncope

Prognosis:

  • High mortality rate
  • 25% succumb instantly
