Etiology:

  • Trauma
  • Sepsis
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Certain drug use
  • Cardiac issues, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, myocarditis, cardiomyopathy, etc.

Epidemiology:

  • Pulmonary edema is more common in patients with cardiac issues, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.

Presentation:

  • Dyspnea
  • Feeling of suffocating or drowning
  • Cough with mucus and/or blood
  • Wheezing
  • Palpitations
  • Chest pain
  • Symptoms may get worse in recumbent position

Prognosis:

  • Pulmonary edema is a medical emergency and must be treated promptly
