Parathyroid Adenoma CT Findings

  • Attenuation in comparison to the normal thyroid gland varies with CT phase. The adenoma has lower attenuation on non-contrast CT and contrast-enhanced venous phase images, but higher attenuation on contrast-enhanced arterial phase images.
  • A range of locations from near the thyroid to the anterior of middle mediastinum
  • May also have cystic foci, fat deposition, calcification
  • Polar vessel may be present

Epidemiology:

  • More common in women
  • 6th-8th decade of life

Presentation:

  • Asymptomatic
