Schwannoma CT Findings

  • Well-defined soft tissue masses
  • Iso-attenuating with contrast
  • May be round, oval, or lobulated
  • Typically of low CT attenuation

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Associated with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 and schwannomatosis

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • Usually presents in adulthood

Presentation:

  • Palpable mass
  • Pain
  • Numbness and/or tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Vestibular schwannoma may cause hearing loss, ringing in ears, and coordination issues

Prognosis:

  • Schwannomas are usually benign
  • The tumors can usually be removed completely with surgery
