Fibrous Dysplasia CT Findings

  • Ground-glass appearance
  • Well-defined intramedullary lesions
  • Typically unilateral
  • Smooth and homogeneous
  • Cortical thinning with smooth outer cortical contour
  • IV contrast enhances lesions

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Usually detected before 30 years of age

Presentation:

  • Usually asymptomatic
  • Bone pain
  • Bone deformity and/or fractures
  • Changes in skin pigmentation (café au lait spots)

Prognosis:

  • Fibrous dysplasia is benign
  • Symptoms can be treated with surgery, physical therapy and/or medication
