Lipoma CT Findings

  • Superficial lipomas are small and well circumscribed, while deeper lipomas are more variable in shape and size
  • Low fat density
  • Between -65 and -120 HU
  • Many lesions have thin internal septa
  • Larger lesions may have linear striations
  • May be hard to differentiate lipoma from liposarcoma

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • May be genetic

Epidemiology:

  • Occurs between 40-60 years of age

Presentation:

  • Small palpable mass
  • Mass can be moved with slight pressure
  • Usually not painful

Prognosis:

  • Lipomas are benign
