Chondrocalcinosis CT Findings

  • Most common around the joints and hips
  • Chondrocalcinosis appears as calcifications on CT but they may not be visible even when chondrocalcinosis is present

Other Information About Chondrocalcinosis

Etiology:

  • Diseases such as chronic kidney disease, osteopenia, hemochromatosis, hyperthyroidism, arthritis, etc.
  • Trauma
  • Can occur spontaneously

Epidemiology:

  • Typically presents after age 65

Presentation:

  • Joint pain
  • Joint swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Joints warm to the touch
  • Can also be asymptomatic

Prognosis:

  • There is no cure for chondrocalcinosis
  • Symptoms can be managed with medication
