Osteomyelitis CT Findings

  • Pieces of sequestered bone (sequestra) which may have lucent rims
  • May have periosteal thickening
  • Decreased bone mineral density
  • Bone degeneration (osteolytic destruction)
  • Intramedullary gas
  • Often mimics other bone diseases

Other Information About Osteomyelitis

Etiology:

  • Usually caused by bacteria
  • Typically occurs after trauma with open wounds, punctures, surgery, and sores
  • Bacteria can also enter the body orifices such as the nose and mouth
  • Patients who are immunocompromised are more susceptible

Epidemiology:

  • Bimodal: typically presents in children and patients over age 50

Presentation:

  • Bone pain
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Malaise
  • Sweating
  • Swelling
  • Skin discoloration
  • Warmth to the touch

Prognosis:

  • Treatment is needed but after treatment, the prognosis is generally good
