Osteomyelitis CT Findings
- Pieces of sequestered bone (sequestra) which may have lucent rims
- May have periosteal thickening
- Decreased bone mineral density
- Bone degeneration (osteolytic destruction)
- Intramedullary gas
- Often mimics other bone diseases
Other Information About Osteomyelitis
Etiology:
- Usually caused by bacteria
- Typically occurs after trauma with open wounds, punctures, surgery, and sores
- Bacteria can also enter the body orifices such as the nose and mouth
- Patients who are immunocompromised are more susceptible
Epidemiology:
- Bimodal: typically presents in children and patients over age 50
Presentation:
- Bone pain
- Fever
- Chills
- Malaise
- Sweating
- Swelling
- Skin discoloration
- Warmth to the touch
Prognosis:
- Treatment is needed but after treatment, the prognosis is generally good
