Osteoma CT Findings

  • Small spherical tumor
  • Measures < 2cm, usually <1cm
  • Intracortical atypical bone (“nidus”)
  • The nidus has low density and high density zones
  • Can involve any bone

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Male to female ratio 3:1
  • Most commonly present between ages 5-25

Presentation:

  • Dull, achy pain
  • Pain is usually nocturnal
  • Bone deformity like scoliosis or bowed long bones
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Joint stiffness
  • Limping

Prognosis:

  • Osteomas are benign
  • Pain can be managed with pain medication
  • More serious cases may require surgery
