  • Asymmetric narrowing of joint space
  • May grow osteophytes or cysts
  • Also described as osteoarthritis

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Linked to trauma, other forms of arthritis, gout, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes

Epidemiology:

  • Very common
  • Typically presents after age 55

Presentation:

  • May be asymptomatic
  • Joint paint
  • Joint stiffness
  • Joint swelling
  • Joint weakness
  • Decreased range of motion

Prognosis:

  • There is no treatment for degenerative joint disease but symptoms can be managed
