Extramedullary Hematopoiesis (EMH) CT Findings

  • Well-marginated, round or lobulated soft tissue mass(es)
  • Smooth surface
  • Interspersed fat attenuation
  • No calcification
  • Can be bilateral

Other Information About Extramedullary Hematopoiesis (EMH)

Etiology:

  • Can arise through pluripotential stem cells
  • Linked to blood disorders and anemia

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • Typically seen in Mediterranean countries

Presentation:

  • Pallor
  • Bruising and/or petechia
  • Abdominal pain
  • Splenomegaly and/or hepatomegaly
  • Bone pain

Prognosis:

  • Must be monitored to prevent complications
