Gout CT Findings

  • Hyperdense lesions
  • Soft tissue swelling with lower attenuation
  • Soft tissue nodules (tophi) that may be calcified
  • Well defined juxta-articular erosions with overhanging edges
  • Asymmetrical involvement

Etiology:

  • Obesity
  • Diets rich in purine (eg red meat) or fructose
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney or heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Familial history

Epidemiology:

  • 3x more common in males
  • Males typically present aged 30-60 years and females typically present after menopause

Presentation:

  • Pain in one joint (usually great toe)
  • Swelling
  • Skin discoloration
  • Warmth to touch

Prognosis:

  • Gout can be managed with medicine and lifestyle changes
