  • Decreased bone mass (T-score <-2.5)
  • Fragility fractures

Other Information About Osteoporosis

Etiology:

  • Caused by natural aging
  • Patients with a family history or history of smoking or excessive alcohol consumption are more likely to develop osteoporosis
  • Patients with endocrine, GI, autoimmune or blood disorders are more susceptible to osteoporosis

Epidemiology:

  • Very common
  • Most common in postmenopausal females
  • Males typically present after age 50

Presentation:

  • Usually asymptomatic
  • Loss of height
  • Changes in posture

Prognosis:

  • There is no cure for osteoporosis but it can be managed with medicine and lifestyle changes
