Kaposi Sarcoma CT Findings

  • Hypoattenuating, low-attenuation nodules
  • Irregular enlargement of the hilum and peripheral portal branches
  • Polypoid submucosal masses
  • Masses with or without central ulceration
  • Irregular fold thickening
  • Hepatomegaly and/or splenomegaly
  • May look like hemangioma

Other Information About Kaposi Sarcoma

Etiology:

  • HHV-8 infection

Epidemiology:

  • Significantly more common in males
  • Patient with HIV, organ transoplants, or other immunocompromising conditions are more susceptible
  • Typically presents after age 40

Presentation:

  • Cutaneous lesion which may have discoloration
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Swelling of the lower extremities

Prognosis:

  • The 5-year relative survival rates for Kaposi sarcoma are:
    • Localized: 84%
    • Regional: 64%
    • Distant: 50%
    • All SEER stages combined: 75%
