Hepatosplenic Candidiasis CT Findings

  • Lesions that resemble microabscesses
  • Hypodense
  • Lesions are typically round with central enhancement
  • Hypoattenuation
  • May have hepatomegaly or splenomegaly
  • Kidneys and lungs may also be involved
  • Patients are usually immunosuppressed

Etiology:

  • Patients typically have recovered from or coexisting neutropenia

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • Typically presents in the 5th decade of life but can occur at any age

Presentation:

  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain or tenderness
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Jaundice

Prognosis:

  • Though the true prognosis is unknown, reports estimate the mortality rate to be 30-50%
