Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES) CT Findings

  • Thickened rugal folds
  • Multiple gastric nodules
  • Gastrinoma (usually < 1 cm) is most often located in the gastrinoma triangle

Other Information About Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES)

Etiology:

  • Caused by gastrinomas
  • Associated with MEN1

Epidemiology:

  • Typically present in the 4th-6th decades of life

Presentation:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain (burning sensation)
  • Acid reflux
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Weight loss

Prognosis:

  • ZES-causing gastrinomas can be benign or malignant
  • If malignant and treated, the 5-year survival rate can be over 90%
