Hemoperitoneum CT Findings

  • Blood collection in the abdomen, pelvis, or central pouch of Douglas
  • Typical attenuation is 30-70 HU but varies greatly depending on a variety of factors
  • Highest attenuation hematoma is closest to the site of bleed

Etiology:

  • Trauma
  • Surgery or biopsy
  • Can also be spontaneous

Epidemiology:

  • Anyone is susceptible to hemoperitoneum

Presentation:

  • Abdominal and/or pelvic pain
  • Abdominal distension
  • Nausea, dizziness or confusion
  • Tachycardia
  • Pallor

Prognosis:

  • Prognosis depends greatly on the cause of the hemoperitoneum and how quickly it’s treated
