Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO) CT Findings

  • Small bowel loop >2.5cm
  • Small bowel feces sign - air bubbles and intestinal content proximal to site of SBO
  • Small bowel wall thickening
  • Transition in size of small bowel loops

Small Bowel Obstruction CT Findings

Other Information About Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO)

Etiology:

  • Trauma, particularly after surgery (adhesions)
  • Hernia
  • Malignancies
  • Many other disease may cause an SBO

Epidemiology:

  • Anyone is susceptible to SBO

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain and/or cramping
  • Abdominal distension
  • Vomiting
  • Inability to pass stool and/or gas

Prognosis:

  • SBO can be cured when the cause is addressed
  • Most people are able to make a full recovery
