Small Bowel CT Appearances
Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO) CT Findings
- Small bowel loop >2.5cm
- Small bowel feces sign - air bubbles and intestinal content proximal to site of SBO
- Small bowel wall thickening
- Transition in size of small bowel loops
Other Information About Small Bowel Obstruction (SBO)
Etiology:
- Trauma, particularly after surgery (adhesions)
- Hernia
- Malignancies
- Many other disease may cause an SBO
Epidemiology:
- Anyone is susceptible to SBO
Presentation:
- Abdominal pain and/or cramping
- Abdominal distension
- Vomiting
- Inability to pass stool and/or gas
Prognosis:
- SBO can be cured when the cause is addressed
- Most people are able to make a full recovery
