Small Bowel GIST Tumor CT Findings

  • Intramural mass when small
  • Can grow endoluminal or exophytic
  • Often central ulceration and/or necrosis
  • Do not usually produce significant adenopathy
  • 3D CT is especially useful in determining organ of origin

Other Information About Small Bowel GIST Tumors

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Linked to NF1 and Carney-Stratakis Syndrome

Epidemiology:

  • Most commonly seen in patients over 50 years

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain
  • Palpable mass
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Hematemesis and/or hematochezia
  • Early satiety and/or anorexia
  • Weight loss

Prognosis:

  • The 5-year relative survival rate for all GIST tumors is:
    • Localized: 95%
    • Regional: 84%
    • Distant: 52%
    • All SEER stages combined: 85%
