  • Polypoid mass
  • Constricting lesion
  • Large ulcerating lesion

Other Information About Small Bowel Adenocarcinoma

Etiology:

  • Alcohol and/or smoking increase risk
  • Diets high in red meat also may increase risk
  • Linked to Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, HIV/Aids, Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome, and Lynch Syndrome

Epidemiology:

  • Typically presents during 6th -7th decades of life
  • Slightly more common in males
  • More common in patients of African descent

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain
  • GI bleed & hematochezia
  • SBO
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia
  • Jaundice

Prognosis:

  • The 5-year relative survival rates are:
    • Localized: 84%
    • Regional: 78%
    • Distant: 42%
    • All SEER staged combined: 69%
