Small Bowel Desmoid Tumor CT Findings
- Soft tissue mass
- Can be >15cm but usually 3-5cm
- Ill-defined margins
- Isodense to muscle
- Radiating spicules extending to adjacent mesenteric fat
- “Whorled appearance”
Other Information About Small Bowel Desmoid Tumors
Etiology:
- Unknown
- Associated with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and Gardner Syndrome
- Trauma
- Increased estrogen
Epidemiology:
- Rare
- Slightly more common in males
Presentation:
- Typically asymptomatic
- Symptomatic patients may experience palpable mass, swelling, intestinal pain, and/or a tingling sensation
Prognosis:
- Desmoid tumors are benign
- Symptomatic patients may need surgical intervention
