Gastric Emphysema (Pneumatosis) CT Findings
- Accumulation of non-dependent air in the gastric wall
- Adjacent fat stranding
- Secondary to injury of the stomach mucosa
- Presents similarly to emphysematous gastritis but patients experience no or mild symptoms
- Evidence of ischemia
Other Information About Gastric Emphysema (Pneumatosis)
Etiology:
- Unknown
- Linked to damage of the stomach wall which can be due to medication, surgery, frequent vomiting, infection, etc
Epidemiology:
- Rare
Presentation:
- Typically asymptomatic
Prognosis:
- Gastric emphysema is benign
