Emphysematous Gastritis CT Findings

  • Wall or fold thickening
  • Intramural gas, venous gas
  • Gastric distension
  • Air in hepatic venous system indicates EG
  • Presents similarly to Gastric Emphysema but patients present with severe symptoms such as abdominal pain and GI bleed

Etiology:

  • Bacteria
  • Gastric surgery and injury, ulcers, infection, and excessive alcohol use increase the risk of EG

Epidemiology:

  • Rare

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Tachycardia
  • Fever
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Sepsis
  • Shock

Prognosis:

  • Mortality rate is between 55-80%
