Gastric Volvulus CT Findings
- Reversal of greater and lesser curves
- Gastric outlet obstruction
- Abnormal location of the gastropyloric junction or gastric antrum
- Wall thickening
- Adjacent fluid or fat stranding
- Coronal images most helpful for diagnosis
- Can result in ischemia or perforation
- Rotation of the stomach by at least 180°is a “severe” or “complete” volvulus
Other Information About Gastric Volvulus
Etiology:
- Gastric volvulus is typically a complication of paraesophageal or hiatal hernia
- May also be primary
Epidemiology:
- Bimodal: typically present in patients less than 1 year old and older than 50
Presentation:
- Abdominal pain
- Retching with the inability to vomit
Prognosis:
- Prognosis is very poor without surgical intervention
