Walled-Off Necrosis (WON) CT Findings

  • Mature encapsulated collection of pancreatic and/or peripancreatic necrosis
  • > 4 weeks after onset
  • Heterogeneous with liquid and non-liquid density within varying degrees of loculation
  • Well-defined wall

Other Information About Walled-Off Necrosis (WON)

Etiology:

  • Occurs after pancreatitis

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • Anyone with pancreatitis is susceptible to WON

Presentation:

  • Often asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Jaundice

Prognosis:

  • WON should be monitored since it can lead to severe complications
