Solid Pseudopapillary Epithelial Neoplasm (SPEN) Tumor CT Findings

  • Average size is 5cm but range is 1-10cm
  • Cystic and solid mass with capsule common
  • Calcifications may be extensive especially around the border of the lesion
  • Calcifications present in up to one third of cases
  • Lesion location more common in the tail of the pancreas

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Male to female ratio is 1:10
  • Typically presents in the 2nd to 3rd decades of life, but can present at any age

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

Prognosis:

  • SPEN tumors are most often benign
  • 5-year relative survival rate for all SPEN tumors is about 95%
