Ampullary Carcinoma CT Findings

  • Irregular nodular mass at distal margin of the pancreaticobiliary junction
  • Hypoattenuation mass around 40 HU
  • Borders may be lobulated or infiltrating

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • More common in males
  • Typically presents after age 70 but can occur at any age

Presentation:

  • Jaundice
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal and/or back pain
  • Diarrhea and/or blood in stool
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Itchy skin
  • Fever

Prognosis:

  • Since ampullary carcinoma is rare, the prognosis is largely unknown
  • Overall 5-year relative survival rate is around 30-70%
