Pancreatic Paraganglioma CT Findings

  • Isodense or hypodense mass
  • Boundary is usually clear but may be ill defined
  • Shows severe enhancement on contrast-enhanced scans
  • Mostly occurs in the pancreatic head
  • Biliary ducts are usually not dilated
  • Rare

Etiology:

  • Unknown

Epidemiology:

  • Very rare
  • Occur twice as often in females as in males
  • A wide age range has been documented for pancreatic paraganglioma

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Palpable mass

Prognosis:

  • Pancreatic paragangliomas are very rare so true prognosis is unknown
  • Malignant paragangliomas have a 5-year relative survival rate of around 50%
  • About 10% of all pancreatic paragangliomas are malignant
