Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN) CT Findings

  • Dilated main pancreatic duct (main duct IPMN)
  • Diffuse or multifocal involvement of pancreatic duct
  • Presence of large mural nodule or solid mass
  • Obstruction of CBD
  • Most IPMNs are benign
  • Larger tumors (>3cm) may be malignant with mural nodules

IPMN CT Findings

Other Information About Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN)

Etiology:

  • Unknown
  • Linked to familial history of IPMN or PDAC

Epidemiology:

  • More common in males
  • Typically present in the 6th-8th decades of life

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Jaundice
  • Weight loss
  • Acute pancreatitis

Prognosis:

  • IPMNs are pre-malignant
  • If resected before malignancy then the 5-year relative survival rate is over 90%
