Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma CT Findings

  • Hypovascular mass
  • Upstream pancreatic duct dilation with abrupt duct cutoff
  • Distal pancreatic atrophy
  • Vascular encasement common (SMA, celiac, PV, SMV)

Other Information About Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma

Etiology:

  • Largely unknown
  • Cigarette smoking, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and chronic pancreatitis increase the risk of pancreatic adenocarcinoma
  • Familial history

Epidemiology:

  • More common in males
  • Typically presents in 6th to 8th decades of life
  • More common in people of African ancestry

Presentation:

  • Symptoms typically present only after the cancer has spread to other organs
  • Jaundice
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Dark urine and/or light colored stool
  • Itchy skin

Prognosis:

  • The 5-year relative survival rates for pancreatic adenocarcinoma are:
    • Localized: 44%
    • Regional: 16%
    • Distant: 3%
    • All SEER stages combined: 13%
