Necrotizing Pancreatitis CT Findings

  • Impairment of pancreatic perfusion and signs of peripancreatic necrosis evolve over several days
  • Early CT may underestimate eventual extent of necrosis
  • Non-enhancing pancreatic parenchyma
  • Non-enhancing heterogeneous peripancreatic collection

Other Information About Necrotizing Pancreatitis

Etiology:

  • Is a complication of acute pancreatitis

Epidemiology:

  • About 20% of acute pancreatitis patients end up with necrotizing pancreatitis

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal distension
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fever
  • Hypotension
  • Dehydration
  • Tachycardia

Prognosis:

  • NP can be managed but is not curable
  • Infection is very common
  • Severe and fatal complications occur in about 30% of patients
