Necrotizing Pancreatitis CT Findings
- Impairment of pancreatic perfusion and signs of peripancreatic necrosis evolve over several days
- Early CT may underestimate eventual extent of necrosis
- Non-enhancing pancreatic parenchyma
- Non-enhancing heterogeneous peripancreatic collection
Other Information About Necrotizing Pancreatitis
Etiology:
- Is a complication of acute pancreatitis
Epidemiology:
- About 20% of acute pancreatitis patients end up with necrotizing pancreatitis
Presentation:
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal distension
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Fever
- Hypotension
- Dehydration
- Tachycardia
Prognosis:
- NP can be managed but is not curable
- Infection is very common
- Severe and fatal complications occur in about 30% of patients
