  • Most commonly seen in the rectum
  • Distended rectum
  • Luminal distension
  • Colon wall thickening >3mm
  • Surrounding inflammatory changes
  • Fecal impaction

Etiology:

  • Chronic constipation

Epidemiology:

  • Most common in the elderly

Presentation:

  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Abdominal distension
  • Cramps
  • Fever
  • Vomiting

Prognosis:

  • Can be treated if managed quickly but can progress to a more serious condition if left alone
