Epiploic Appendagitis CT Findings

  • Ovoid fat-density lesion
  • Thin wall enhancement
  • Fat stranding
  • Can present clinically like diverticulitis or appendicitis
  • Well visualized on CT and usually treated conservatively

Etiology:

  • Torsion
  • Thrombosis
  • Infection
  • Obesity increases risk of EA
  • Epidemiology:

    • Rare
    • Typically presents between ages 40-60
    • More common in males

    Presentation:

    • Focal abdominal pain
    • Nausea and/or vomiting
    • Abdominal distension
    • Fever

    Prognosis:

    • Epiploic appendagitis usually goes away on its own
    • Surgical intervention is rare
