Mucocele of the Appendix CT Findings

  • Round or tubular mass
  • Well-encapsulated, cystic
  • Dilated appendix
  • Peripheral calcification
  • Little periappendiceal inflammation
  • Mucoceles caused by cysts are usually smaller, < 2cm
  • Material inside appendix is homogeneous, low attenuation
  • Can result in pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP)

Etiology:

  • Chronic obstruction of the appendix
  • Appendiceal neoplasms

Epidemiology:

  • Rare
  • Typically presents in the 6th-7th decades of life

Presentation:

  • Typically asymptomatic
  • Abdominal pain
  • Acute abdomen
  • Palpable mass

Prognosis:

  • Mucoceles are typically benign
