Colon CT Appearances
Mucocele of the Appendix CT Findings
- Round or tubular mass
- Well-encapsulated, cystic
- Dilated appendix
- Peripheral calcification
- Little periappendiceal inflammation
- Mucoceles caused by cysts are usually smaller, < 2cm
- Material inside appendix is homogeneous, low attenuation
- Can result in pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP)

Etiology:
- Chronic obstruction of the appendix
- Appendiceal neoplasms
Epidemiology:
- Rare
- Typically presents in the 6th-7th decades of life
Presentation:
- Typically asymptomatic
- Abdominal pain
- Acute abdomen
- Palpable mass
Prognosis:
- Mucoceles are typically benign
