Other Information About Perforated Appendix

Etiology:

  • Untreated appendicitis

Epidemiology:

  • Appendicitis is more common in patients under 20 years of age
  • Anyone who has untreated appendicitis is susceptible to perforation

Presentation:

  • Abdominal pain, particularly around the navel
  • Abdominal distension
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Bowel obstruction

Prognosis:

  • Perforated appendix is a medical emergency
